Hej…..if you want a slice of Scandinavia look no further than The Harcourt. This restaurant is in a refurbished pub with within the ‘Swedish’ quarter of London. It’s diagonally opposite the Swedish Church on Harcourt Street, close to Edgware Road tube station.
With a labyrinth of rooms, it’s the perfect place to book a private function. I recently did such a thing to celebrate my Swedish mother’s 80th birthday, hence the picture of me dutifully wearing a full Swedish costume to keep her happy and others amused.
The Harcourt staff were superb. From booking in advance to serving on the day every request was dealt with swiftly and as required.
The menu may be just a nod to Scandinavian with Gravadlax, pickled herring, Nordic Reindeer meat, Swedish meatballs and Finnish Carelian pie but there’s also a wide selection of European classics including popular British ones too. All dishes are served beautifully with tasty garnishes. For my recent visit, guests chose from the set menu starting at £40 per person. I personally selected the slow cooked duck egg with smoked mayonnaise and straw potato to start, followed by the baked line caught cod with a hazelnut, parsley and buckwheat crust accompanied by fennel and dill sauce and then to round off my meal, I enjoyed a poached concorde pear with a mulled wine reduction – ‘Fantastisk’.
If you are planning a private function either large or small, then I would recommend this little gem and pretend you are by a lake, surrounded by pine trees with the odd Volvo driving passed!
